The present attempt to differentiate four BCG daughter-strains by means of the guinea pig protection test is based on an experimental proceduro previously shown to be sensitive enough t classify, by order of decreasing immunogenic activit, three BCG vaccines of the same origin, simultaneously lyophilized, but respectively prepare with 7, 14, and 21 day-old cultures showing drecreasing but very close viable cells count.
Statistical analysis of the results of the hypersensitivity test showed that the four BCG daughter-strains could be divided into two groups of 2 strains each, these two groups significantly differing one from another in their hypersensitizing activity.
On the other hand, statistical analysis of the results of the immunizing activity test showed that the four BCG immunized groups of animals differed significantly from the controls. Three of the four BCG daughter-strains studied gave remarkably comparable results; the fourth one, even though showing a higher viable cell count, gave a somewhat lower degree of immunity, being located somewhere between that of the first three immunized groups of animals and that of the controls.
