Résumé

Banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted gold deposits have the potential to form giant mines. They are structurally controlled stratabound deposits that represent one of the main targets for gold exploration in the northern part of the Precambrian Canadian Shield. Research is conducted on the world-class BIF-hosted Musselwhite (Ontario) and Meadowbank (Nunavut) gold mines in order to define key exploration vectors. The Musselwhite deposit is hosted in polydeformed amphibolite facies BIF of the Mesoarchean North Caribou greenstone belt, Superior Province. The Meadowbank deposit is hosted in BIF and volcaniclastic successions of the polydeformed and metamorphosed Neoarchean Woodburn Lake Group, Churchill Province. Detailed mapping and U-Pb geochronology of these gold deposits reveal a very complex structural setting with several strain increments and polyphase folding adjacent to major fault zones. The ore zones are associated with high strain zones concentrated along hinges and strongly attenuated fold limbs. The location of ore zones is influenced by competency contrasts between rock types and the layered anisotropy of host units induces structural complexities pre- and post-Au deposition. Major fault zones, associated folds and specific silicate facies exert fundamental controls on the spatial distribution of ore zones in BIF-hosted deposits.
