Résumé

Demasy et al. (2025, JEMBE 591:152119) reported strong acute toxicity of aluminum (Al) to natural phytoplankton communities in the Southern Ocean. We evaluate their findings in the context of existing knowledge regarding aluminum's effects on marine phytoplankton and the necessity of testing aluminum fertilization as a potential carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy in iron-limited oceans like the Southern Ocean. We want to point out several methodological omissions, internal inconsistencies in the results, and questionable interpretation that undermine their conclusions.
