Complex interactions between host plants and an optimized microbiome can prime plant immune responses and enhance stress resilience.
However, the molecular dynamics of the host-microbiome interactions under elevated environmental temperatures remain underexplored. Here
we have characterized the in vitro physiology of rhizobacterial strains under different temperatures, including growth rates, phosphate
solubilization abilities and direct anti-pathogenic capabilities. We found that temperature-sensitivity of these parameters depend on the species,
with an observed distinction between Bacillus and Pseudomonas strains. In situ, we have monitored bacterial proliferation of a B. velezensis
strain and P. defensor WCS374 in the rhizosphere and on the rhizoplane of Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) at two temperatures. We determined
that the rhizobacterial competency and the host plant’s epiphytic recruitment of microbes are species-dependent, with less profound effects by
temperature. Finally, RT-qPCR analyses reveal that Bacillus and Pseudomonas differentially influence the temperature-sensitivity of defense
hormone-related gene expression in the tomato phyllosphere. Overall, we have shed light on the effect of temperature on plant interactions with
beneficial members of the rhizosphere microbiota, which is vital to advance microbiome-based technologies facing global warming.
