Résumé

We have used acridine orange, which at pH 3 is known to give different colours with DNA or RNA, in order to "stain" non pathogenic and pathogenic Staphylococci, and also pathogenic growns in the presence of several antimetabolites. differences in colours and intensity of this secondary fluorescence were found bewteen the strains in each group. Among the 11 non pathogenic strains studied, four had a high degree of heteropeneity and were a mixture of vividly colored cells in shades of green, orange and red; five strains showed exclusively orange and red cells, and two other strains only green cells. Among the 19 pathogenic strains examined, four resented a mixture of orange and yellow-green strains, with more restricted range in colours than non pathogenic strains; eight strains contained mostly orange-red cells while five others showed a majority of yellow-green cells. When pathogenic strains were grown in the presece of acridine orange (0.1mg/ml.) more cells were orange or red in a way similar to those of some non pathogenic strains. This modification toward a non pathogenic aspect is in accordance with some macromolecular changes that we have previously described. These modifcations could not be correlated with a decrease in the virulence for mice of these acridine orange modified pathogenic Staphylococci. Antibiotics and nucleic acid antimetabolites producted changes similar to those described for acridine orange but to a much leaser degree.
