Résumé
For Jan Nijman, a suburb must be conceived as ‘a transitional space’, meaning a space that includes relational and evolutionary dimen-sions. Nijman argues that we must stop seeing suburbs as fixed entities placed in an asymmetrical dependence with the city centre. Rather, the suburbs must be seen as evolving and autonomous spaces, which also form part of an urban region. Following Nijman, our hypothesis is that it is impossible to understand the formation and evolution of peripheral centralities—and, moreover, the political struggles in which they are involved—if we disregard their quest for autonomy.
