Résumé
DNA methylation at the carbon-5 of cytosine in CpG dinucleotides is one of the epigenetic mechanisms controlling gene expression and genomic stability. In mammals, DNA methylation is highly dynamic during spermatogenesis, with a complete reset and reprogramming during fetal life followed by specific variations during meiosis, spermiogenesis and sperm maturation. Importantly, changes in DNA methylation were associated with altered spermatogenesis and progeny outcomes. Hence, DNA methylation patterns carried by the sperm constitutes a key element of male inheritance and its sensitivity to the environment makes it an important factor in carrying adaptation. It is emerging as a potential biomarker of male fertility and male inheritance predictive of the health of the progeny.
