A general review about main electrochemical and membranes technologies is presented in this work as alternatives to remove pollutants from waters, such as pesticides, heavy metals, organic matter, and microorganisms. Activated carbon is described as an example in most detail. Also, some advances about studies have been carried out at the National Institute for Scientific Research – Water, Earth, and Environment (INRS – ETE French capital letters) from Quebec, Canada. A project among INRS – ETE and two Mexican Higher Education Institutions is been developing as part of the Quebec-Mexico Work Group activities, they are ITSON and ITESCA.
