Résumé

This chapter documents why, to the theorists of innovation, imitation is not innovation and innovation not imitation and when and how innovation came to be defined based on the dichotomy innovation-imitation. The first section looks at early thoughts on innovation as imitation and the loss of this meaning in the seventeenth century. The rest of the chapter documents the emergence of the concept of innovation among scholars in the twentieth century. For a second time, innovation lost the meaning of imitation, or rather, imitation competes with originality for a place in the semantic field. The last section discusses four factors that explain the neglect of imitation in theories of innovation.
